UC as a college student

Sun, August 03, 2014 1:40 PM

Im a 20 year old college junior and i live a pretty active lifestyle during the school year.  I was wondering how everyone else deals with their UC when they go out.  My current gameplan is to pretty much not eat past 5pm and go to the bathroom before i go out later.  I also avoid the drunk munchies like the plague because i know i would regret that later in the night.  The worst part about the whole thing is the mornings for me.  Whenever i sleep with someone I know i will need to use the bathroom first thing in the morning.  Ive pretty much perfected the shady exit in the morning which i dont do on purpose, but more out of necessity.  I wish i could stay and get breakfast or something but that's impossible.

To make things even more awkward is the fact that all the pills ive been prescribed in the past havent worked or have given me really bad side effects.  My doctor has recently prescribed me Rowasa.  For those of you unfamiliar with this particular treatment, rowasa is a rectal enema of mesalamine...Its reccomended that i do it before bed but thats where im having an issue.  I go out about 4-5 times a week and i sleep out almost every time i go out, weather it be on a couch or i find a bed.  I heard some people take the enema in the morning after they have a movement and keep it in for a full 24 hours which sunds more effective than just overnight.  Has anyone tried this?  Actually, has anyone played this whole enema game in general while being away at school.  Luckily all my roomates are all supportive and arent an issue, im just curious if anyone else has similar lifestyle issues.  any comments are appreciated, its good to know theres other people out there who have these issues.  juggling social life with uc is turning out to be tricky for me, anyone have any tips?

hey squidward,

Props to you for not letting your UC get in the way of your social life at college. I'm a sophomore myself and was diagnosed early on in my freshman year and have been pretty much scared to leave my room too much besides for classes since then. Partying is pretty much out of the question for me since drinking makes my symptoms flare up to the point where I kind of want to die which sucks, a lot. But I've been there with the whole enema at school thing. It's great that your roommates are understanding of what's going on. I tried explaining it to my roommate last year but she wasn't the brightest bulb in the pack and didn't really get it when I told her that I'd need a minute to myself in the room at night before I went to bed. But other than worrying about my roommate busting in with her boyfriend while I was trying to use the enema it wasn't bad at all, and it will probably work if you use them in the morning instead of trying to do it before bed on those nights you go out.

Good luck and i hope you find some symptom relief!
